“Caban Sgriblio is stretching the limits of our creativity and it ignites a flame inside you – it starts small and dimly lit but once it’s started it can no longer be tamed.”
– Caban Sgriblio Residency Participant
Caban Sgriblio was a BBC Children in Need funded project from 2016-19 that aimed to support young people aged 9 – 18 years through South Powys, Blaenau Gwent and Monmouthshire. This project offered participants the opportunity to engage with creative writing and digital media to promote positive mental wellbeing; developing confidence, improving communication skills and offering tools for self-expression, all while making friends and having their voices heard.
This Caban Sgriblio Residency provided a weekend of creative writing and digital arts, for young people involved in the project over the last few years. The weekend combined creative media, offering participants the opportunity to create film poems.
Emma Beynon and Uschi Turoczy led mornings of creative writing and performance practice to develop curiosity and confidence in the young people. They then worked with digital artist, Gweni Llwyd to explore digital art while learning new skills; filming, recording and editing.
From the poetry written over the weekend, the participants then created Film Poems which were viewed at the end of the residency.
The two-day residency provided an opportunity to reflect on and evaluate the overall impact of the project, as well as provide the young people with time and space for self-reflection.
Excerpt from Observe & Write by Dafydd Reeves
They take to the action
Like fish to the ocean,
Then the editing stage where the flames of activity silence
And concentration and murmurs hold sway,
Though even here there are snippets and sniggers of laughter
For the fun is fermenting still.
Free writing in utter silence
Save the sound of scribbling and breath
What have they written?
A girl declares a bright and blazing word
And though some are shy
They are happy and friends are made.
